Goal

This year I want to promote and support many of my favorite charities. Some of these will be personally important, some will be timely based on world events and some may be groups I discover over this year of giving. I hope by creating this blog, donating my daily $5.00 and bringing attention to the cause, I can change the world in a good way. Please consider following my lead by making a donation to any of the groups that resonate with you.

Africa Foundation

Africa Foundation was created in 1992 when Conservation Corporation Africa (now known as andBeyond) was founded in South Africa. A central principle of Conservation Corporation Africa's safari lodge business model was the belief that the involvement and development of communities surrounding wildlife conservation areas were essential to the success of its lodge operations. Africa Foundation (United States) and Africa Foundation (United Kingdom) work in partnership with Africa Foundation (South Africa), safari lodge operators and adjacent communities to identify, fund, build and sustain projects in four key areas: Education, Healthcare and Clean Water, Income Generating Activities and Environmental Awareness.

TAKE A VET FISHING

Our slogan is "A day of giving back" and is the core of our mission. When our brave service men and women return from overseas, as a nation, we have been failing to show these heroes our appreciation. A shockingly high number of service members are returning with injuries and even the soldiers without physical wounds are having a hard time adjusting back into the "real world". These "Hero's" have given so much of themselves for our freedom. Reaching out and offering a "Thank You" with a hand shake, is the very least we can do. At Take a Vet Fishing, we take it a step further. Not only do we show these hero's our gratitude and shake their hand, we hand them a fishing rod and ease their minds back into civilization.

Project Aware

Project AWARE Foundation is a growing movement of scuba divers protecting the ocean planet – one dive at a time.
Over the past two decades of underwater conservation we’ve learned that divers are true leaders in ocean protection. We’re ocean heroes numbering in the millions across the globe. We believe together our actions will make a huge impact and will help to rescue the ocean.
With new programs and more online resources than ever before, Project AWARE supports an unprecedented global movement of divers acting in their own communities to protect oceans and implement lasting change.
We’re focusing in on two major ocean issues –Sharks in Peril and Marine Debris, or trash in our ocean. Truly, there are many conservation issues converging on our ocean planet at once, but we’re concentrating on these serious problems where scuba divers are uniquely positioned to directly and positively affect real, long-term change in these two areas.

Bimini Shark Lab

Established & incorporated in 1990 by Dr. Samuel Gruber, today the Bimini Biological Field Station Foundation (BBFSF) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organisation located on the island of South Bimini, Bahamas. The mission of the BBFS Foundation is to advance our knowledge of the biology of marine animals especially the heavily impacted elasmobranch fish fauna (sharks and rays); to educate future scientists at undergraduate and graduate levels; and to disseminate our research results to advance the field of marine science and conservation biology, as well as raise public perception and awareness of sharks and other marine species.

BBFSF has three main objectives:

Understanding the biology of sharks and rays and the role that they play in the marine ecosystem through cutting edge field and laboratory research spanning multiple disciplines such as molecular and behavioral ecology, physiology, conservation and sensory biology.
Educating future scientists through providing opportunities for students, to design and conduct research projects at the undergraduate and graduate level, to complete advanced university degrees in the marine sciences; and through voluntary training as interns, thus advancing their field experience and skills.
Enhancing conservation and awareness through disseminating our results to both the public (tours of our facility, talks, TV documentaries, social media, posters and blogs) and scientists (peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations and posters, fishery reports and books).

Wild Aid

WildAid's mission is to end the illegal wildlife trade in our lifetimes by reducing demand through public awareness campaigns and providing comprehensive marine protection.
The illegal wildlife trade is estimated to be worth over $10 billion (USD) per year and has drastically reduced many wildlife populations around the world. Just like the drug trade, law and enforcement efforts have not been able to resolve the problem. Every year,  hundreds of millions of dollars are spent protecting animals in the wild, yet virtually nothing is spent on stemming the demand for wildlife parts and products. WildAid is the only organization focused on reducing the demand for these products, with the strong and simple message: when the buying stops, the killing can too.

Coral Reef Research Foundation

The Coral Reef Research Foundation (CRRF) is a non-profit organization (501(c)(3)) incorporated in the State of California and the Republic of Palau whose purposes are to increase knowledge of coral reefs and other tropical marine environments to allow intelligent conservation and management decisions. CRRF was founded in 1991 by a group of marine biologists as a vehicle to increase our understanding of the species, dynamics and interrelationships of marine environments and their relationship to man. As such we do both basic and applied marine research, with special emphasis on species diversity work, collection for biomedical screening, environmental monitoring, reef fish spawning biology, and innovative development of new techniques for marine research work. Our research programs are oriented towards the following areas, (1) dynamics of the marine environment as it relates to conservation decisions, (2) limits of species diversity, community distribution and biogeography, and (3) monitoring with respect to short to long-term environmental and climate changes. Our research has been made possible by support from organizations both within and outside Palau and has resulted in numerous scientific publications since 1991.

Kirtland's Warbler Initiative

The Kirtland’s warbler is a conservation success story. For over 40 years the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Forest Service, Kirtland’s Warbler Recovery Team and other conservation partners have been committed to the recovery of the species through investments to conduct integrated habitat management and cowbird control programs. These efforts have resulted in the species returning from near extinction to numbers strong enough for the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service to consider delisting under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Michigan’s Kirtland’s warbler program is considered a national conservation success story for endangered species management!   Recovery and eventual delisting is the goal of any species protected by the ESA, and the right next step for Kirtland’s warbler. This transition, however, presents a unique challenge. Kirtland’s warbler is considered a “conservation reliant” species meaning it needs continued human intervention and action for long-term survival. To successfully transition from recovery to a future of sustained conservation programs and strong population numbers new strategies and partnerships must be put in place to successfully achieve long-term sustainability. The Kirtland’s Warbler Initiative (Initiative) was developed to help with this transition and eventually make delisting a reality. - See more at: http://www.huronpines.org/program.asp?pjt=gv&gid=6#sthash.lchrtAxR.dpuf

Kalamazoo Nature Center

Certain places have a magic that draws people to them. Cooper’s Glen, one of the best-loved spots in Kalamazoo County, has possessed this power for centuries.  There is evidence that Native Americans camped near the glen prior to European settlement.  Some of Cooper Township’s first European residents lived close to the glen, building their homes in the clearings made famous by James Fenimore Cooper in his book “The Oak Openings”.   Later families and friends traveled out from Kalamazoo by dirt road, by boat along the Kalamazoo River or on the interurban railway to picnic.   Families went for picnics, biology students for field study, amateur and professional ornithologists to observe and enjoy varied bird life, photographers to capture images, and botanists to study and enjoy the varied wildflowers and other plant life.”  (from  Glimpsing the Whole, the Kalamazoo Nature Center Story, 1995) In the late 1950’s gravel mining and commercialism threatened Cooper’s Glen, so a group of community leaders came together to purchase the land and establish an outdoor environmental education center that would become known as the Kalamazoo Nature Center—one of the first nature centers in the country.

Dr. H. Lewis Batts, Jr. was a nationally known environmentalist at the time and the driving force behind the purchase of Cooper’s Glen and the incorporation of the Kalamazoo Nature Center in 1960.  Dr. Batts continued to serve as the center’s volunteer Executive Director until his retirement in 1989 when Dr. Willard M. Rose was hired to lead the organization into the future.

Today The Kalamazoo Nature Center, recognized by its peers as one of the top nature centers in the country, has expanded to include 1,100 acres of wooded, rolling countryside five miles north of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
